Make a little room for you

Caring for someone does not make your own needs disappear. You deserve practical help and room to look after your health, relationships, and rest.

  1. Name what feels hardest right now

Choose one pressure point, such as transport, constant calls, or having no time off. You do not have to solve every challenge at once.

  2. Choose one specific request

Think of one task someone else could take. Be clear about when and how they could help.

“Could you stay with Dad on Thursday afternoon so I can keep my appointment?”
  3. Look for support beyond family

Ask a local aging service about caregiver support and respite options. Availability and eligibility vary, so check with the service directly.

  4. Keep your own care in the plan

Protect time for your own appointments and rest where possible. If you are worried about your health or how you are coping, talk with a health care professional.

One thing to remember

Asking for a specific kind of help is part of a sustainable plan.
